RDQCA's Second Annual Car Parade Kicks off Pride Month!
The Red Deer Queer Community Association's second annual Car Pride Parade went off without a hitch this past Saturday. We had approximately 30 cars in our parade with attendees coming in from as far as Hanna and Edmonton to participate.
We'd like to extend big thank-yous to the Penhold Fire Department for their participation, as well as the Comité FrancoQueer l'Ouest, the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre, and the Red Deer Native Friendship Centre for coming out and joining us! Y'all helped to make our event that much more special and we loved being able to share it with you!
We would also like to especially thank Constable Mike Evans with the RCMP for his continued support of our pride events and his hustle to make sure our parade went smoothly and safely.
The route followed down Gaetz from Parkland Mall until 32nd, then turned into Red Deer College to recollect everyone before going back up Gaetz until 43rd Street, which we followed around to drive past the Farmer's Market and then proceed up through downtown. We got onto Ross and took that up to Taylor, which we then followed back up to Parkland where everyone finished up the parade with raucous honking and cheering.
We are so pleased with the turnout this year, and with how the weather held up throughout the parade's duration. Thank you to everyone who came to participate and to show their support. We wouldn't have been able to do any of this without you, and with your help, next year will be even better!
Thank you, too, to Sean McIntosh from the Red Deer Advocate for writing an awesome article about our event (and getting a decent quote from me)!
“With everything that’s been going on lately, in the schools especially, it’s really important to show that we’re not going anywhere,” said Alex Pugatschew, association vice-chairperson.
“We want to show the young people here that there are adults to support them. We definitely want to show we’re here and we’re loudly proclaiming that we’re here no matter what – no matter the weather, no matter what school boards say, no matter what the government says.”
